The Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the most widely followed cricket tournaments in the world, has been suspended indefinitely due to growing tensions between India and Pakistan. The decision was taken following the abrupt cancellation of Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala, which was halted midway due to security concerns.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) convened an urgent meeting soon after and officially decided to pause the tournament. A senior BCCI official stated, “Continuing with cricket matches while the nation is facing a potential conflict doesn’t seem appropriate. Therefore, we have decided to suspend the tournament in the interest of national security.”
The 2025 IPL season had kicked off on March 22 with a game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Of the total 74 matches scheduled, 58 had already been completed. The grand final was initially set to take place on May 25.
As of now, no new dates or venues have been announced for the remaining fixtures. It is expected that further decisions will be made once the geopolitical situation shows signs of improvement. This comes shortly after the Pakistan Cricket Board opted to relocate the remainder of its own PSL matches to Dubai, following damage to the Rawalpindi Stadium.
